More About the Dinner Tour

The dinner hop is an opportunity to explore lesser known (but very delicious) Penang food, as well as the unique traditions & beliefs that make George Town such a remarkable part of our World Heritage. We call it a “Dinner Hop” because we are “hopping” from various dishes, places and stories. Our hope is that this weaves together an image and understanding of Penang that is truly unique to you.

During dinner, we love talking about the unique belief systems, practices and traditions in George Town - almost one of a kind in the region - that are barely clinging to life. Modernity and change are eroding so much of the city’s history and personality. We hope that by telling the stories of local communities, we can help preserve them in people’s memories.

Dinner food in George Town is very different from the lunch time bustle fare. Dinner is personal time for many locals and the food reflects the more relaxed, intimate atmosphere the evening brings. Dishes like nasi kandar, bamboo noodles and desserts like leng chee kang make an appearance, free from the pressures of Top Ten lists and travel shows. This makes it a great opportunity to discover new dishes and the stories of the people who make them.

Locations and Landmarks

The dinner hop explores the areas around the George Town Core Heritage Zone and Buffer Heritage Zone. This includes areas such as Harmony Street (Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling/Pitt Street) - from the St. George’s Church to the Kapitan Keling Mosque to Lebuh Chulia (Chulia Street) and Jalan Penang (Penang Road). We sometimes make a segue into Lebuh Armenian (Armenian Street) for the story of minority communities that no longer exist in Penang.

Many historic sites in George Town have more to share than meets the eye. As part of the dinner tour, we often visit different historic and cultural landmarks that may require a practiced eye to notice. There’s also plenty of street art with entertaining stories and many personalities that add colour to the city.

It’s often the case that the curious and engaged experience much more of the city. If you see something interesting, ask us about it!
